It has been almost a year since I have updated the blog, and we’ve since had one baby and moved into one new house! You may remember we had plans to build a new house on our empty lot, but my husband lost his job unexpectedly which is why we ended up living in a remodeled RV so we didn’t have to sell our lot in inner SE Portland. Last August we had the opportunity to purchase the house across the street from our lot before it ever went on the market. It’s a wonderful little 1,000 sq ft, three bedroom one bathroom house with a giant yard! The lot is an oversized lot and almost a double lot, which is rare to find in inner Portland anymore. We really, really love our street and neighbors, so we decided to purchase the house and take a few years to build up our savings again and revisit the house build then. Now, a year into it, we have another big life change coming up that I will share a lot about on here, so I thought making a quick post on this little house would be fun!
The first thing we tackled was the backyard, since we spend a lot of time outdoors. The lot is huge but the back third was full of half-dead rhododendrons and weeds. There were traces of brick garden beds from owners long before us and we wanted to restore this yard back to it’s garden glory.
We couldn’t believe how many brick garden beds and paver paths we found under years and years of dirt and overgrowth. Several paths connected around garden beds and to the back gate. Here are a few shots of the garden throughout the Spring and Summer.
I absolutely love gardening and learning about how to grow our own food and lots of flowers for the bees, birds, and other little pollinator friends. Our plan for the empty lot is shifting and we would love to build a big community garden for our street with some picnic benches and maybe even a playhouse for the neighborhood kids. We’ll see how it evolves throughout the seasons!
