Another unexpected turn of events in our lives, but this time a great one! When we tore down the house on the lot we were planning to build on, we loved how open and empty it was. There are so many kids on our street and they all play outside together often. Josh and I began to think how cool it could be to turn our empty lot into a community garden and hang out area for the block. We had dreams of putting out picnic tables and benches so the parents had somewhere to hang out while our children ran around. I pinned so many images of huge gardens with pebble paths for the kids to explore. But. We knew we needed to eventually move in to a slightly bigger house that would likely have to be on that empty lot.
About six weeks ago, I was out and got a text from my husband that said “The son-in-law of the lady next to the lot knocked on our door and wants to know if we want to buy her house.” Immediately I responded “YES.” We were unsure of how we would make this work financially, but we felt determined to. The house is on a double lot and while it’s in poor shape on the inside, has good bones. I sincerely think a developer would knock it down and build multiple houses on the lot. It was a dream and an answer to prayer. We felt so peaceful about it all and prayed for wisdom and direction. There was no negotiation process, we simply walked across the street and met with our neighbor and her family, we agreed on a price that she wanted, and started the paperwork! During this time, Josh had two major work projects fall into place that allowed us to qualify for a traditional mortgage (self-employment makes financing a bit harder, so we are incredibly thankful for this working out).
Today we signed all the paperwork and got the keys to our house. We didn’t tell our kids until today, just in case anything fell through. They have been talking about wanting a house with a basement for a long time, so this is fun!
The house itself is in need of A LOT of work, including gutting out a lot of the rooms. We are really looking forward to this process, as we clearly like a remodel project 🙂
We are so incredibly thankful to have this opportunity- we are no longer planning on building a new house, instead we get to remodel this one and keep the lot as a community space like we wanted! Getting to live directly next door will be so wonderful, too. We have thanked God every day for this chance, and worked out butts off to save money for this new adventure.
Of course, I’ll be sharing every step of the way as we remodel, so check back here and on my Instagram. Video tour of the place coming tomorrow!
